Portland, Oregon averages approximately 155 days a year with rain in measurable amounts. The closest beach to the city of Portland would be Seaside. Some of the beaches in Oregon are fine for swimming, but a lot of people choose not to because it’s typically too cold. Seaside is one of the beaches where you might find people swimming during the hottest months of the year (July and August). Portland is a pretty safe and friendly city but you should use the same precautions you use in other major cities. You may see some panhandlers during the days and it’s best not to roam the streets alone at night. Portland is, after all, bike friendly and the second most “eco-friendly” city in the world! There are plenty of interesting things to see and do when visiting Portland. If you are limited only to the downtown area be sure to check out the Zoo, OMSI (science museum), Saturday Market, walk the Waterfront Park, China Town, Shanghai Tunnels (Portland Underground), Portland Classical Chinese Garden, Portland Japanese Garden, take a trip on the light rail and go pub crawling in the micro brew capital of the world! Portland has plenty of clubs, bars and strip clubs if you’re into that sort of thing too. If you can get out of the city limits make sure to see the Columbia River Gorge and Multnomah Falls, Mt. Hood and Timberline Lodge and of course the Oregon Coast.
I have swam many times on Oregon beaches, the water is pretty cool even in August but still fun. Seaside is about 80 miles from Portland and is a very nice, quaint resort town. It is probably the closest thing in Oregon to say the Jersey shore or Santa Cruz. Rainfall is more in the winter in Portland and the summer can be very hot and dry. Many people go to Salmon Street Springs in downtown and cool off, very fun in my book.(and I am 40) Do not miss the rose test gardens and OMSI which has a WW2 submarine docked at it. It is also near downtown.
